Lesson 3 Homework Practice Variables And Expressionsl: Review and Assessment



Research Design and Methods: The research follows a mixed methods approach. The researchers will collect video-analysis assessment data and criterion measures of teacher knowledge from approximately 200 teachers, and records of teaching practice and student data from approximately 40 of those teachers. The project consists of two phases: Phase 1 is designed to function as a proof of concept. It consists of the development of a video-analysis assessment on fraction concepts and operations, including an estimate of the instrument's internal consistency and inter-rater reliability. Finally, Phase 1 includes a comprehensive validity study, which uses the following three sources: (1) a criterion measure to assess teachers' pedagogical content knowledge on fractions; (2) data from student performance assessment on fractions and student achievement data from standardized tests; and (3) a record of teaching practice on the topic of fractions, consisting of a lesson plan, a videotaped lesson, and a teacher post-interview. During Phase 2 -the scale-up phase of the project-two additional video-analysis assessments, one on ratio and proportion, and one on variables, expressions, and equations, will be developed. Again, the instruments' internal consistency and inter-rater reliability will be estimated. For these assessments, validity will be evaluated based on criterion measures of pedagogical content knowledge for the respective topic areas.


One of the strongest features of the CCSS-M is the Standards for Mathematical Practice (See Appendix). Addressing a clear need for students to develop problem solving skills, these practice standards are identical from kindergarten through twelfth grades and describe the habits of strong mathematicians. According to the TIMSS Videotape Classroom Study (Stigler, Gonzales, Kawanka, Knoll, & Serrano, 1999), teachers often "design lessons that remove obstacles and minimize confusion [where] procedures for solving problems would be clearly demonstrated so students would not flounder or struggle." Lessons that are planned from this perspective limit students' abilities to deeply understand content. I want to do the opposite, but not with abandon. As explained below, I have come to believe through my research that successful problem solving experiences depend not only on rich tasks, but also on the careful planning and execution of lessons that include time for reflection and consolidation. In order to promote rich mathematical exploration and discussion, I will use the Five Practices Model (Smith and Stein, 2011) to design and execute thoughtful lessons.

EVALUATION: It is appropriate to identify dominant labor markets, asexplained above, but markets should be selected with theory and practice in mind. It isnecessary to exhibit caution when developing a model as not to over-model the data;selection and identification of dominant labor markets should be both theoretically andstatistically significant.
